NEW!
LAURA STEVENSONWheel from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

New! Laura Stevenson's new album Wheel features strings by Grammy award winning violinist Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Antony And The Johnsons), brass accompaniment from Kelly Pratt (Beirut, Arcade Fire, David Byrne and St. Vincent), and was produced and mixed by Kevin McMahon (Swans, Titus Andronicus, Frightened Rabbit, Real Estate). Laura Stevenson was born and raised on Long Island with music in her blood. Her grandfather Harry Simeone a successful composer (“Little Drummer Boy”, “Do You Hear What I hear”) and her grandmother Margaret McCravy a singer for bandleader Benny Goodman. On Wheel she pours geography and heritage into the record, tackling family dynamics of dependence and support, and the feelings of isolation and insignificance that she has experienced while growing up surrounded by a vast body of water on a planet surrounded by an endlessly expanding universe. The album is also about coming to terms with these relationships and feelings, as well as her own and other’s mortality. Many of the lyrics on the album explore these themes before coming back to an understanding and acceptance of our place in the world, the short time we will spend here, and the people we end up sharing it with.

LIVERMORE, LARRYSpy Rock Memories from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

In 1982 Larry Livermore, ex-greaser, post-hippie, burnt out and disillusioned by the Bay Area punk scene, journeyed north into an off the map, off the grid mountain wilderness that lay at the heart of California's Emerald Triangle in search of something “real.” Things got way more real than he’d bargained for, as he ended up confronting blizzards, droughts, floods, fires, marauding bears, skunks, rattlesnakes, and a posse of ornery pot growers, all while launching a magazine, a solar-powered punk rock band, and the DIY record label that introduced the world to the likes of Green Day, Operation Ivy, and Screeching Weasel. As he learned valuable lessons in self-sufficiency, taking responsibility, and how to avoid (for the most part but not always) getting punched in the face by irate hippies, Larry also found his place and made his home in the far-flung, disjointed and eccentric community he encountered in the anarchic realm that begins where Highway 101’s tattered tarmac dissolves into the dust of Spy Rock Road.

BLACK WINEHollow Earth from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Hollow Earth is the third full-length from former members of Hunchback and the Ergs -- Jeffrey Schroek, Miranda Taylor and Jason Nixon – updating their moody distortion-heavy pop punk with fuzzy guitars and their most melodic vox yet; see “Blurry”, where Taylor’s voice pops over grungy distorted guitars, sounding sweeter than ever but with the same sense of punk skepticism: “We were friends / all was well / no personalities to market or sell.” “Hollow Earth” is an ear-splitting high-energy shout-along (“If you don’t see it for yourself / how can you really know?”) while the even heavier “Knots” has the most memorable recurring surfy guitar solo and crashing drum fills.

BLACK WINESummer of Indifference from Don Giovanni

BYRDS OF PARADISETeenage Symphonies from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

At once filthy, dreamy, druggily intoxicating and soberingly intense, Brooklyn-based Byrds of Paradise churn out slop pop tunes wearing garage/psych/punk clothing that are as sweetly sticky as they are layered, noisy and driven. The band, started by D.C. expatriate Kenny Brown in late 2009, is clearly informed by classic D.C. punk sonics, although not defined by them. That winter, Brown left D.C. to return to his New Jersey home and dedicate several weeks to recording a long- planned demo with his dear old friend and now singer Jared J Jones, ex-Dustheads). Brown then relocated to Brooklyn, where a full band came together with Alan Yuch (ex- Mongoloids) on drums and Brenden Britz (Subway Sadists, Whiteworks) playing bass. Byrds of Paradise released their debut “Rowena” 7” on Wild Words records, followed by their Don Giovanni Records debut, the “Omega Man” 7” and their most recent 7”, “Barefoot Paradise”, on UK label Sleep All Day Records.

CALIFORNIA XCalifornia X from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

In less than a year, Amherst trio California X have emerged from basements and punk practice spaces of Massachusetts as one of the tightest new garage punk bands in the Northeast, teetering between various pockets of the punk spectrum drawing influence from the worlds of noisy 80s Western Mass rock, fuzzy 90s garage pop, and classic post-hardcore SST sounds. Fronted by main songwriter Lemmy Gurtowsky, their debut LP for Don Giovanni follows one prior release, a double A-side single Sucker b/w Mummy out via the UKs Sound of Sweet Nothing label. From start to finish, the records eight hook-heavy tracks of melodic guitar punk could all be singles: the noisy vox and huge grungy riffs on Curse of the Nightmare; the slower-burning head-banging pulse of Pond Rot; the shoegaze-inflicted fleshed-out melodies of Lemmys World. Songs like Hot Hed feels so essential youll wonder how theyre not actually from some long-lost punk tapes of the 1980s Western Mass. Appropriately, the band recorded the album in MA with Justin Pizzoferrato, previously a collaborator with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr and though California X sound like they could have been contemporaries with those bands, theyre also carving out their own space in a lineage of their hometowns punk history. ""I want a pond to rot in" isn't exactly a call to arms, but as the refrain from California X's first single off their upcoming self-titled debut, it's tough to think of anything that more accurately describes their goals of self-actualization. If "grunge" or "swamp-rock" wasn't already part of the public lexicon, they're amongst the first two descriptors you'd levy on "Pond Rot." The riffs are thick and slow, yet maintain a surprisingly viscous sense of melody that isn't obscured by the heavy fuzz, while the vocals sag like they're wrapped in worn flannel. Here, the Amherst, MA trio are forthrightly acknowledging a debt to hometown heroes Dinosaur Jr., embracing the primordial pop sense of their earliest work while picking up at the point where they finally got some decent production." - PITCHFORK LISTEN TO "Pond Rot" : http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/14591-pond-rot/

Available in our NEW STORE!

These are the last 3 songs The Ergs ever wrote, and they are three of the best! While some got a chance to pick up one of the copies rushed for their last show with a foldover jacket, these are the real deal (a jacket with a spine and everything!).

FOR SCIENCERevenge For Hire from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Finally available on vinyl! Here's a nice review from Razorcake: Perhaps The Ergs! have sprinkled the fine state of New Jersey with magical pop punk dust, covering the impressionable youth with a love of Screeching Weasel and 1980s melodic punk melodies. Could it be? It is! Yay! Yummy pop punk without sounding like The Queers Beat Off (the mistake of ninety-six percent of post-1998 pop punk bands, according to my statistics). Seventeen songs in twenty minutes and thirty-eight seconds! If this were a cereal, it’d be Frosted Cheerios, covered with the, um, sugar that is The Ergs! I can’t stop listening to this!

HILLY EYEReasons To Live from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Noisy guitars, floating harmonies, and tight, angular drumming mark the debut full-length by Hilly Eye, the post-punk duo of Amy Klein (vox/guitar, formerly of TItus Andronicus) and Catherine Tung (vox/drums). From start to finish,Reasons to Live is a seamless stream of ethereal noise-rock minimalism and humming harmonies -- experiments with dissonance and tonality, drawing inspiration from the likes of Lightning Bolt to Japanese noise rock band Nisennenmondai to Sonic Youth, with free-noise moments reminiscent of early Boredoms. On moments like Amnesia, Kleins pristine vox soar high over a careful, driving drums and perfect wooshes of shoegazey riffs, building with potential energy until they explode into a noisy wall of cathartic distortion. Elsewhere, complex layers of intricate drums weave through cyclical loops of guitar riffs and dueling shimmery harmonies on the aptly titled Double Dutch. The full-length album sees a more expansive versions of Jersey City, with Kleins vocals occasionally peaking into an fervent shout. The record closes with their previously released single Jacobs Ladder. Hilly Eyes sound is drawn from a distinctly post-riot-grrrl energy, expertly crafted by two musicians fully in command of their craft, with ears for dark, hypnotic dynamics. "In the year that's passed since her surprising departure from Titus Andronicus, Brooklyn-based guitarist, writer, and activist Amy Klein hasn't exactly kept quiet. These days she's fronting two bands: the lush, folk-rock five-piece Leda, and the pummeling, primal-sounding duo Hilly Eye, who earlier this year signed to New Brunswick punk imprint Don Giovanni. "Amnesia," the first glimpse of their debut LP Reasons to Live, recalls Klein's Titus days in the way it presents a passionate but complicated kind of patriotism. The song is a study in contrasts: during the verse Klein's voice lilts and her guitar chimes tunefully over Catherine Tung's insistent beat, while the chorus rumbles with the sort of discord and sudden volume that would make Pixies proud. "Oh, glory," she wails, the searing vocal performance recalling her recent take on the X-Ray Spex classic "Oh Bondage! Up Yours!" But the next line reveals the track to be more of an impassioned critique than a one-dimensionally sunny national anthem, "My country, it lies."--PITCHFORK

  NOUNHoly Hell from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Now available on vinyl! With the band Screaming Females, Marissa Paternoster has been known to shred until her fingers bleed. But with her 5-year-old low- profile solo project Noun, Marissa dedicates less time to shrieking and soloing, and more to intricate studio work and lower-key instrumentation. Holy Hell, the first official Noun release, incorporates keys, organs, and toned-down guitars and drums. The result is clearly different than Screaming Females: it’s mellower, more melodic, and whereas the Screaming Females’ songwriting process is a three-way discussion, Marissa writes all of the songs for Noun. Holy Hell features drum work by Angela Boylan (of Cheeky), Miranda Taylor (Hunchback, Black Wine, Full of Fancy), and Jarrett Dougherty (Screaming Females), plus bass lines by King Mike (Screaming Females).

Cleveland transplants in Brooklyn play Ramones and Spits influenced punk that is paranoid as hell. Zach Gajewski from For Science plays bass.

NUCLEAR SANTA CLAUSTOrder of the New Age from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Nuclear Santa Claust's 2013 LP for Don Giovanni is inspired by classic punk and garage sounds, twisted into 12 paranoid hook-heavy fast-burners, full of distant, dissonant echo-heavy dual vox, driving double-time drums, and complex lead guitars. Following a self-titled 7-inch, Order Of the New Age is the debut full-length by these three Cleveland transplants now in Brooklyn. Essential listening for fans of the Ramones and the Spits. No song breaks the three minute mark, working within the framework of classic punk to riff on systematic destruction and paranoia in the new age. "Radiation Fall Out" is all noisy layered guitars and melodic riffs. "Numbers Stations" breaks off into a patch of psyched-out guitar feedback space sounds. "Government Issued Acid Trip" and "Summer Vacation" play out fast, full of sharp leads and punchy energy, offering social commentary through the lens of skepticism about the world at large. These are punk songs for the end of the world.

  SCREAMING FEMALESUgly from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Screaming Females' seven years as a band, four full-length albums and 700 globe-spanning live shows has made them difficult to miss. Through it all, the New Brunswick, New Jersey trio have continued to exude a frenetic energy which is built upon the zeitgeist of America's punk and indie underground yet has always remained forward-looking. Fittingly, for Screaming Females' 5th album Ugly, the band enlisted legendary recording engineer Steve Albini, famed for his unique ability to capture the ferociousness of a live performance while delivering gorgeous sonic clarity. The album's 14 tracks reaffirm the touchstones of the band; they can still shred and front-woman Marissa Paternoster can still unleash a powerful howl. But it doesn't end there. The album ushers in new explorations for the band, a truly remarkable feat considering their already prolific output. Ugly has the perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship that produces the type of rock & roll which is still a force to be reckoned with.

SHELLSHAGRumors in Disguise from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Epic followup to Destroy Me I'm Yours. The band explains: “Most of the songs on the record are about hope and despair, love and survival, death and fear.” From the grin-laced stubborn pride in the vocals on “Resillient Bastard” to Jen Shag's tom- heavy heartbeat rhythms on crunchy duet “Means That Much”, every inch put to tape is as real as it gets. Finding honesty and purity of creative expression in the vastness of what our musical landscape has evolved into is a more difficult task than ever before, and it takes a band like Shellshag and a record like Rumors in Disguise to answer that search. Now, listen.

  SHELLSHAGShellshag Forever from Don Giovanni
Available in our NEW STORE!

Listening to Shellshag is like listening to a 15-year story of punk love and DIY tours, a sentiment that is summed up all over the Brooklyn-via-San Francisco’s new record, Shellshag Forever. The album follows 2010’s Rumors in Disguise – a record marked by huge hooks and a fuzzy balance of sweet and sludgy pop punk. That all surfaces Shellshag Forever, except that here Shell and Shag’s songs sound clearer and more fully-formed than ever. “We’ll raise a family, building lots of memories /and grow old together, what could be better?” asks the lead single, “Face to Face”, an apt title for the sort of punk band who plays every show facing each other, with John Shell on guitar and Jen Shag standing playing drums, wearing a belt full of sleighbells for added percussion, singing both into a Y-shaped mic. “We’ll keep playing shows from Brooklyn to ole ‘Frisco / and grow old together, what could be better?” It’s a song about Shellshag, about crisscrossing the country together since the 90s, about keeping punk dreams alive. Jen Shag and John Shell play seemingly bare-bones guitar-and-drunks pop-inflicted punk songs, but listen closely and the simplest of lyrics are embedded with meaning. “Sweet Hoodie” seems like a song about Shell’s old sweatshirt but is actually the story of their entire relationship and the memories worn and torn into it; it’s about meeting and being young, playing punk rock shows, about forgiving yourself and others, making mistakes, falling in love. Shellshag Forever is a microcosmic glimpse into the life of Shell and Shag. This record also showcases their individual songwriting, with some of the strongest tracks being the Shell-sung “Come Down” and Shag-sung “I Love You Anyway”. The most resonant moments are always when they sing together though. Mid-way through, the duo sings in harmony on “Forever”, over the hum of Shell’s fuzzy riff and Shag’s steady minimal drum, summing up this record and the general essence of Shellshag: “I just can’t picture me and you in any other life, this is what we are meant to do forever.” “This album is very Shellshag,” says the band. “The themes, as usual, are unique to our personal experience in the world we have created for ourselves, from our homemade gear, to us pleasing ourselves and playing for each other. We have developed a consistent sound now and have really let the vocals fly on this record. This record falls in right in line with were we left of with Rumors from the artwork to the content.” “We can’t picture any other life,” they continue. “We get what we choose and we choose Shellshag and we both know it. We are sure. We are Shellshag forever.”

STEINWAYSPromise It'll Never Happen Again from Don Giovanni / It's Alive
Available in our NEW STORE!

I am not exactly sure what The Steinways are promising will never happen again, but if it has anything to do with making, playing, recording or releasing music, I hope they are proven to be liars someday! Listening to all of these songs collected from singles, splits, compilations and Grath's iPod made me remember why I loved them so much when they were still around - they made some of the most fun and fantastic pop punk music of the past decade! "Promise It'll Never Happen Again" collects remastered versions of every song ever released by The Steinways that didn't appear on either of their two full length albums. Two tracks are being released for the first time, another was only available on a not-exactly-available-for-sale wedding gift 7" that only 150 copies of exist, and the first eleven are being made available in digital format (iTunes and the like, as well as download codes included with all copies of the LP) for the first time... officially anyway.
