Three original songs and a Guided by Voices cover! Some of their best stuff yet!!

In my mind, the Grabass Charelstons have reached the level of Rocket From The Crypt, Tiltwheel, or Fugazi. I'm willing to follow 'em to places I probably wouldn't go by myself and I find myself being constantly rewarded by the journey. Ragin' full-on punk, this isn't, but how can one discount heart-felt, original music made by solid gold dudes? Grabass fights and fights; they know the score often before lacing up, gets their asses handed to them on occasion, and they dust off, and come back with secret hooks and crooked smiles. It's this scrappy, for-the-music quality that makes me, less and less, able to critique their songs and just let them soak in, note by note'like every other song they've ever written, it seems and let them reveal themselves on their own time, play by play. It's been several years since I was first exposed to them on their split LP with Billy Reese Peters, and since I haven't tired of listening to them yet, I doubt I ever will, and that's a monolith of a recommendation. This batch of four (one's a Guided By Voices cover) is full of destructive feelings somehow making suicide not seem so bad and dark brightly played. -Todd Taylor/Razorcake

NINJA GUN "Smooth Transitions" from Barracuda Sound
BUY CD • $7.00

Ninja Gun is adept at playing down home, punk-influenced rock and roll with heart. Singer and guitarist Johnathan Coody taps into the vein of a great singer/songwriter tradition and intertwines it with a love of classic punk rock and loud guitars. The resulting sound is not quite like anything else, but when you hear it, you get the feeling that you’ve known it all along. The Valdosta, GA group's Southern roots are also prominently on display with some good front-porch-sitting, toe-tapping rhythms and twangy guitars thrown in for good measure. “Smooth Transitions” offers a good mix of up-tempo rockers and melodic ballads with lyrics that alternately lash out at the mainstream and look inward for answers.

SIR PRIZE FIGHTER "Beat it to Live" from Barracuda Sound
BUY CD • $7.00

Sir Prize Fighter’s music possesses an immediacy and vitality that can’t be ignored. The Gainesville three-piece specializes in playing hard-hitting punk that shifts between metal-inspired riffs and discordant twists before converging into dead-on choruses with great harmonies. Guitarist Chad Smith and bassist James Parker share vocal duties with two distinct styles that contrast nicely with an aggressive musical attack that hits you from all directions. It’s like a punch in the face from a close friend. They manage to create dynamic songs with a well-balanced blend of melodic punk rock and powerful post-hardcore in a unique way. There should be something here for fans of all types of punk.

TOWERS OF HANOI "Black Feathers" from Barracuda Sound
BUY CD • $5.00

Black Feathers was born during a four song recording session when Towers of Hanoi stumbled over a few idea’s and realized they wanted to create a rock album that would tell a story. So, they dropped two of the four songs, pulled out fresh ideas, and went full steam ahead towards their first full length album. The result is a short story about a girl who grew up in a shipwreck of a home and had to move fast to survive in her surrounding environment. Luring lost souls in and out of cheap motels, she sold her body to beasts and gained a reputation for being ruthless towards her marks and compassionate towards her comrades. In the midst of it all, she spawned a baby girl, whom she tried to shelter from the madness around her. Despite her efforts, the child was taken because she couldn't quit the only thing she knew. She's left emotionally barren, disassociated from reality, and clinging to her dreams of a very different life. Towers of Hanoi deliver this story with soaring vocals, nervy guitar work and a powerful rhythm section unleashing a deluge of chaotic rock n' roll.

TOWERS OF HANOI "Paranoia For the New Year" from Barracuda Sound
BUY CD • $7.00

"Paranoia for the New Year," the latest offering from Gainesville's Towers of Hanoi, is a big dose of rock and roll, packed with massive beats, huge riffs and powerful female vocals that threaten to bring the whole world down. Travis Whitton's guitar and Rachel Whitton's vocals compliment each other perfectly. The diverse riffs and melodies intertwine, diving and curling around each other in an ongoing predatory game. Jason Day's razor-sharp bass attack and Jon Reinertsen's driving drumbeats complete the sound, giving the songs a rumbling intensity that threatens to explode at any given moment. The tracks on "Paranoia for the New Year" show Towers' growth as songwriters and musicians. Songs like the title track climb to epic proportions, building up and backing off in just the right places. Travis takes on the role of both lead and rhythm guitar player, contributing to Towers' tension-building sound that consists of melodic leads giving way to driving rhythms. Rachel's voice is undeniably one of the most powerful in rock and roll, male or female. Her melodies evoke the feeling of a rollercoaster climbing to the top of the first drop, before plummeting straight down; the bottom of your stomach dropping out before swooping back up to do it all over again.

TOWERS OF HANOI "Towers of Hanoi" from Barracuda Sound
BUY CDep • $2.00

If post-hardcore is a genre, then this is it. Thick and slowed down hardcore stylistics form the basis for this complicated rock, both mathy and emotive. The almost gothic vocals add an eerie feeling--reminds me of Ashes, but with less emphasis on the guitar chug. --Punk Planet, July and August 2003
