TUBERS / BRAINWORMS from Bakery Outlet / Rorschach / Dead Tank
BUY 7" • $3.75

Back in print!! "Saint Augustine, Florida in the summertime can be a magical place. A weekend spent there can create twenty years good memories hanging out in the hot Floridian sun with your friends. One moment you're hanging out at your friend's lake house drinking beers doing relay races and in a snapshot, you're playing volleyball cockfighting style on a tarp wet, slippery from dish detergent. For the working man, the summer season is over. Somewhere deep within the northern woods, a trail crew is wrapping up its season with a final all night from dusk 'til dawn rager. Multiple handles of Jack are consumed; PBR freely flow out of cans into mouths, hair, and the ground. People exploit tiki-torches to spit fire igniting a gasoline-soaked chair nestled in the middle of a yet to be started bonfire. Young men and women with shaved mohawks are burning things they don't need anymore like clothing, equipment, and/or facial hair. This is one of those parties where drunk people with an acute attraction for wrestling and making a lot of noise get sweaty with pick axes. Young people are getting weird in the woods and not thinking about tomorrow. As the summer fades to fall, Brainworms sets up to be the houseband. The underground railroad from St. Augustine to Richmond, VA finally comes to listeners in the form of Tuber's split with the almighty Brainworms. Having years of friendship and numerous 12 hour drives built up over time, it only seems natural to have these two bands come together to commemorate friendship and make peace with alligators, whatever that means." --Jeff Beyers

"Alex Lopez proved he had the ability to write amazing pop songs with his previous bands Anklebiter and Argentina, and with the Beat Buttons he has only perfected that. James Hernandez (bass) and Micah Daw (drums) combine to form a powerful rhythm section and help create catchy bass lines and ripping drums beats that you can shake your ass to. Reminiscent of the Pixies, Wedding Present, and Superchunk, but refreshingly unique, these guys are quickly becoming one of Gainesville's favorite bands. Every song on this record will stick in your head: catchy, dance-y, and absolutely amazing live! This is one of those records you put on in the morning if you want to be stoked about the day." - Ryan Murphy "Ex-members of Argentina and Slang come together to form Gainesville, FL's Beat Buttons. The bass and drums drive hard to keep you dancing, while the guitar and vocals mimic each other with melodies that will hold you long after the CD is over. The Beat Buttons succeed in the same way a band like Weezer does (or did)--making complex, well-thought out pop songs that sound simple and effortless. I heard someone say that Alex Lopez (vocals/guitar) writes 'children's songs for adults,' and I think he does. The songs are so natural and memorable, you feel as though you've known them forever." --Lenny Rutland (Bakery Outlet Records)

  CASSETTE "Cassette" from Bakery Outlet
BUY CD • $8.50
DOWNLOAD from iTunes

Cassette is Samantha Jones. Though the live and recorded manifestations of Cassette may take on many forms--sometimes alone and unguarded with just acoustic guitar and voice, while at other times backed by a rotating band of friends--the songs and the warm, compassionate, inviting feelings projected from them are wholly Samantha. Known by many from her days with bands like Rumbleseat, Bitchin', and Crustaceans, Samantha's work in Cassette is a departure from her past. All defenses have been lowered, and we are welcomed into the heart of Samantha's experience- told in a frank, honest, and organic voice. The themes vary on the album from songs that express heartbreak in terms that even the most heartbroken can relate to, to skillfully woven narratives that make listeners feel as though the singer is giving heartfelt advice directly to them. The tracks reflect a spectrum of musical influence from the country twang of "Spring's Gone" to the jazzy lilt of "Thirst Like Water." With this self titled release, Cassette has produced a record in the vein of David Grubbs, Will Oldham, and Lucinda Williams. On this particular manifestation, Cassette is Samantha on guitar and vocals, backed by Stirling Krusing (piano), Gabriel Galvin (drums & percussion), and Matt Radick (bass and cello), all resident musicians of Gainesville, Florida. The arrangements on the album are beautiful and complimentary. No single instrument struggles for attention, which allows the focus to fall on the songs, and Samantha's literate, insightful lyrics. Samantha has a voice that's hard to encapsulate with words.?Her talent is timeless and comparable to?classic singers like Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, or Emmylou Harris. She sings so good it'll make your heart ache.

Samantha Jones returns with new cast once again as Cassette to touch base with a new ep of beautiful compositions. Songs of simplicity, layers, folk, wisdom, reverb, melody, motherhood, string arrangements, and even a few electronic beats. Songs written by a woman who has given to more aggressive bands before such as vanbuilderass, Crustaceans, Bitchin', Slang, and currently Honest Arrow. Oh yes, she also played in Rumbleseat. Recorded with Bakery Outlet's Leonard Rutland at his house Electriclennyland with children and dogs present. --Rich

DES ARK "Loose Lips Sink Ships" from Bakery Outlet/Bifocal Media
BUY LP • $8.50
BUY CD • $9.00

"Des_ark, on this recording, is a two piece rock band from Durham NC. Aimee plays some of the most kingshit guitar I've ever seen- someone you watch trying to figure out what she's doing to produce the brilliance coming out of her amp while projecting this piercing melody full of deeply commanding sentiment and marching all over the place, all in one fluid movement. Tim anchors with drums that don't compete, but are felt by how hard he calculates the beat. It all drives and pauses and changes direction and then gets to the point. Lucky for us fans Des_ark continues now through Aimee and who knows who in the future, but the chemistry on this record is surely one of the things that makes this quite an important one." --Rich/Bakery Outlet

ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH CRUNCH "Let's Ride" from Dead Tank/Bakery Outlet
BUY LP • $8.25
BUY CD • $8.50
DOWNLOAD from iTunes

St Augustine's Environmental Youth Crunch digs Woody Guthrie, CCR, swimming, camping, bikes, making their own fuel and beer, all outdoors Florida has to offer, and sings about Florida environmental politics. EYC plays pop punk rock. They talk about ideas important to them between songs-rare around here these days given the swell to embrace the nightlife and not the day we've got to navigate too. EYC steers through both fluidly and with purpose. They offer ideas and actions towards something heavy directly affecting us and they do it in their sweaty underwear. Let's Ride is their first full length album. Let's Ride our rusty bikes into the ocean. . .Let's Ride on biodiesel touring throughout Florida. . . Let's Ride in opposition to those Disney cowboy chumps on the cover in the rodeo to overdevelop EYC's beloved state.

HOLOPAW "Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness." from Obscurist Press/Bakery Outlet
BUY LP • $8.00
BUY CD • $10.00
DOWNLOAD from iTunes

We're very excited to see Holopaw back at it with their third full-length, Oh, Glory Oh, Wilderness. After two acclaimed records with Sub Pop, Florida natives John Orth and Jeff Hays changed their strategy in favor of a more scaled-down, home-grown approach to creating music. What you have here is Holopaw's second coming: ten tracks of lulling guitar and meaningful lyricisms that encompass the struggle and hard work of putting a band back together. "Little Stallion With A Glass Jaw" elegantly exemplifies the sense of urgency behind Holopaw's new line-up (including Patrick Quinney of Fiya/Nervous Dogs) to the tune of added strings, drums & horns. Tales spun together through encounters with "Boys On Motorbikes" and "The Lazy Matador" unwind perfectly with lyrics about sweetness, longing and the potential for some violence. Oh, Glory Oh, Wilderness sees Holopaw at their best that fans of Destroyer, Fruit Bats & Califone will instantly find something to love with Holopaw's new offering!

LANDLORD "Lifers" from Houseplant Records/Bakery Outlet
BUY LP • $9.25
BUY CD • $8.50

Chris and Matte from The Door-Keys join Will from Defiance Ohio to make up Bloomington, IN's garage-punk answer to Dinosaur Jr. With haunting melody and beautiful harmony, this three-piece play 1990's alternative rock with vibes of Meat Puppets or Teenage Fanclub. While Bloomington residents might catch The Coug chowing down at Chipotle, Landlord rings in a true era of midwest small-town romance with flawless songwriting, wide dynamic range, perfect pop-sense, and punk energy. Music lovers with a vast appreciation for all types of rock and roll will find much to rally behind here as the band channels the laid-back groove of Neil Young, the minor/major key shifting of The Zombies, J Mascis-esque guitar shredding, and builds on the blissful pop-punk cornerstone laid by their own The Door-Keys. "Lifers" was recorded to tape in one sleep-deprived session at Chattanooga, TN's Revolution Sound by Mike Pack (Future Virgins). Then, these workhorses handmade the album collage artwork, insert, and limited edition screened posters.

MATTY POP CHART "Everyone Does Everything" from Bakery Outlet/Plan-It-X

Matt is a Tobey. Brother to Erin. One of them once told me they do not descend from any immediate artistic talent. I think it's a lie. They seem to successfully do anything they set out to do on their own--write thoughtful songs, birth the cover art, tour, the whole trip--and inspire people through every step. Here is Matty's second album, bringing us further along his way to recording songs through brilliant, light instrumentation narrating dreams and hesitations. But they are indeed only hesitations since we have this album in hand. Why write a solo album? After all, thats the thing to do lately. Everything's been done! It's all a cycle. What makes it important is the individual perspective. Now you can see through Matty's eyes and also do something of your own as the screwballs on the cover art suggest! --Rich/Bakery Outlet

Fans of the No Idea compilation LP #1 Reason to Move To Gainesville will be sure to recognize the track from this session.   OLD GROWTH "Old Growth" from Bakery Outlet
BUY LP • $8.50
BUY CD • $8.50
DOWNLOAD from iTunes

Old Growth write stripped-down, straightforward, sometimes tragic, songs of life, to which John Magnifico (Twelve Hour Turn) brings full chords from his guitar and rediscovers melody in his voice. John'slyrics parallel his songs - simple in form, but revealing an incredible depth of narrative that could easily be overlooked. Old Growth's sound is something like Uncle Tupelo, or Wire's early rock'n'roll numbers. Luke's (Science of Yabra) bass drives in line with Ben's mid-tempo drumming and backing vocals which fill in the right spaces. Ben also adds a few of his own songs, singing up front while nodding to the Ramones or the Stooges. Old Growth plays punk rock'n'roll - taking theirs and others' past to make tradition fresh: "It was childhood living... I won't take it back, I won't erase." - Rich Diem/Bakery Outlet

What a great record! Portland Oregon's Old Growth gives "Under the Sun" as their second full length. It continues the conversation, as band name and cover suggest, of embracing the beauty our flawed origins have given and filtering out the intolerance as best we can so we can return to them without remorse. It is a voice illuminating the pavement and the creation we all continue to have made. It offers light on classic subjects of troubled love, work, habit, time and more importantly the topic of rejuvenation through exposure to natural light and things not constructed by machines. This is no hippie bullshit. Yes punks, connection to nature is the answer. Musically the band carries on with more decisive punk rock'n'roll drive this time still with catch and southern lens. "Under the Sun" is the salve to a double worked under fluorescent lights and a crack in the wall to see your way out of there. --Rich/Bakery Outlet

OLD GROWTH / 12XU from Bakery Outlet/Pure Pain Sugar
BUY 7" • $3.75

"Old Growth gives 2 new songs splintering in either direction from their full length offerings. Luke sings the aggressive almost Yabra-like "Hey Young" with guitar representing both traditional and indie solos. "A Year in the Dirt" brings additional strings in the way of violin and vocal melody backed by female counterpart to form a perfected midpace pop number. Lyon France's 12XU shows that members of Daitro can write quite a different tune pointing to simplified well formed punk rock the way it was originally recognized some decades ago. 2 straight forward soulful numbers provide a great followup to their own 2 7"s already in existence. One Rick Froberg was commissioned for cover illustration and lyrics come to you in tongues of English and French. Si! I mean Oui! This record also comes with download card for digital punks." --Rich/Bakery Outlet

OLD GROWTH / SCIENCE OF YABRA "split" from Bakery Outlet

Both are from portland. They also share a member and a recent european tour, for which this record offering was intended. These are new songs from the bands until each release new LPs in the near future.

SOLID PONY "Collar to Cuff" from Bakery Outlet
BUY LP • $8.50
BUY CD • $8.50

Life it surely did eat us. Like many a band, Solid Pony shot out of the gates with an album of songs that wrote themselves. After the honeymoon was over members married (not each other), schooled, taught, captained bells, started other bands, went to Thailand; and in the midst managed to write some lovely songs, tour the US and Europe, build a studio and record themselves from 2004-2007. Maybe Solid Pony never found a proper context to share its songs, only knowing punk avenues to present itself also knowing its sound was not quite fitting, but more a sort of Pollard-like construct pointing to indie pop and acoustic numbers. No matter, this is the second album and we love it. Now as we are masticated just a little more, Lenny is in DC set to start grad school at American; studio is disassembled and band is even less prolific. but don't worry, there is a 7" single for "Collar to Cuff" on the way.

"Both Megan March and Johnny Geek, equal parts of Street Eaters, were born in Oakland, raised in the East Bay, and came of age in the Gilman/Geekfest/Mission Records world. At times you get a glimpse of that East Bay on this record, but the sound more teeters back and forth from bellowed call and response vocals alongside blown out driving to a halt bass and drums to shared pop punk melodies and immediacy. They alternate from the longer more committed number to the shorter burst that leaves you with a 2 minute song complete with "whoah-oh!"s and "hey!"s stuck in your head oftentimes still there when you wake the following morning. They jam econo having no use for a six string guitar. They also play in other bands (Fleshies, Master Volume, Triclops!, Harbinger, Neverending Party, Before The Fall, Younger Lovers, etc.) "We See Monsters" is a vinyl only release that comes with MP3 download card." --Rich/Bakery Outlet

Ten Volt Shock is a noise-hardcore-punk band from Freiburg, Germany. "6null3" is their second full length album. It is gritty and urgent, basic and unassuming, both forward and angular in its approach. Frank?s (guitar, vocals) band Kurt was a heavy influence on me in my formative years, and now Ten Volt Shock inspires me in much the same way. For fans of: Kurt, filthy bass, push/pull guitars, king kong drumming, and shredded vocal cords. Tsch???sssssieeee!

Comprised of members of Kurt, Ten Volt Shock's songs are highly energetic and have the unique combination of brute force and intelligence. Inventive drumming and guitar lines, coupled with perhaps the nastiest sounding bass in the western hemisphere = a drag you through the dirt intensity. Plus they are from Germany's Black Forest, which might be one of the toughest sounding places a person could claim as home! This self-titled CD is the first full-length release from the band. "The debut album by Freiburg's finest rockers, including Frank of KURT... and since it's always difficult to describe your own records, let's quote a fine review from the USA: 'Layers of noise flesh out the trebly bass and drums bones of this German noise-hardcore band - while the throaty, semi- distorted screams and harmonic feedback from KURT vocalist/guitarist Frank adds the epidermis. So sure, this sounds a bit like KURT; but its brutality hits like a hammer instead of a midnight intruder!" -- X-Mist

Now available on LAVENDER vinyl!! "If I were to describe Erin's music like a white coat wearing professor of musicology, I would say that the she creates songs that are sometimes beautiful, shy and fragile, and at other times are self-assured, powerful declarations on what it is to be alive. Erin does a great job conveying the emotion of love through well thought lyrics, and sparse, almost ghostly instrumentation. For the most part, the recording is just a space-echoed voice, and a cleanly fingerpicked Danelectro guitar. But Erin adds many subtle touches like air organs, ukeleles, and the occasional sound of a distant, marching snare drum. Also, Rich Diem of Twelve Hour Turn plays slide guitar, and contributes a little singing to the album. People might know of Erin from her other bands, Abe Froman and Mt. Gigantic, or perhaps from Here It Is zine. She is a very talented person in art, music, and in life. I wish the best for Erin, and I hope that everyone loves this album as much as I do." --Lenny Rutland (Bakery Outlet Records)

Tangible things break. They are instruments to help you along your way not intended for an end. Tubers knows this as well as anybody: their instruments break on them as though habitually, paths are rerouted like clockwork, and vehicles with the best intentions and cleanest burning fuel do not go. This is only a reminder there are more important things to sing about-the tangible mark we leave behind, how we define ourselves in real and inebriated ways, addictions, the spaces we make in our community, and those that pave our way. Tubers is a power trio. Three parts more fully equalized in this second album. They once played in Twelve Hour Turn and The South. They try to stay in the green room. They are credited with being the first and only surf-emo group but would like to be thought of as a punk band.

VERDE "The Undeserved Current" from Bakery Outlet
BUY CD • $8.50

Verde is the musical project of Neptune Beach, Florida's Sean Mahan. Sean has been scattering his handprints all over underground music since the late '90s via paintings which have graced album covers by bands such as Floor, Planes Mistaken for Stars, and Twelve Hour Turn. What many people don't know about Sean is that he's equally talented in the aural arts as he is in the visual--and just as hard working and prolific. Recorded at home on 8 track, Verde utilizes voice, keyboard and guitar, recycles drumbeats, culls the talent of friends, and takes funny built-in digital effects and miraculously de-cheeses them. The effect is a highly layered album that is not congested, with each sound conspiring to affect a subtle beauty. It's Verde's innnate sense of selection that pulls the disparate elements together while extracting the best out of each. The Underserved Current is, as Sean puts it, "a surf inspired, fun, indie rock album for both getting stoked and taking it easy." It is an inspiring, relentlessly personal pop record that we are honored to be a part of. Enjoy. For those who appreciate bands such as Galaxy 500, Guided by Voices, or the Magnetic Fields.
